DAD USED TO SAY that Mom was a
"high stepper." I loved to watch her get
ready for "Saturnights," Mom & Dad's
dance club, which gathered every other
Saturday night (naturally) in the
penthouse ballroom of the old Fontenelle
Hotel. Fresh and clean-smelling from her
bath, she'd slip into one of her elegant
evening gowns. She wore pearls
sometimes, depending on the dress...
earrings always... and she would dab
Shalimar on her throat and wrists.
A woman dancing the Charleston at the Folies
Bergère, Paris, 1926

Sometimes, when I'm alone in my
apartment, the scent of Shalimar drifts by.

The Charleston was passé by the time
Mom and Dad started Saturnights. Now
and then, though, if we begged, Mom
would do some pretty slick
Charleston
moves for us.

Mom and Dad died a long time ago, and we
still miss them as much as ever. Now I give
Mother's Day cards to My Favorite
Moms— sister, daughter, daughters-in-law,
nieces — and Father's Day cards to my
sons, brother-in-law, son-in-law, nephew,
and a few other terrific guys I know.

God bless mothers and fathers everywhere
-- never perfect, but always doing the best
they can!
