| Daddy Pete used to say that when your whole life is a prayer you’re ready for anything comes along. He told me, “Sister Alma Rose, it’s like this: Y'all are a fish and God is the ocean. Long as y'all stay in the ocean, y'all’s in your right place in God’s creation and won’t come to no harm. But there’s a serpent swimming in that ocean telling lies. He’ll swim right up to y'all and he’ll say, ‘Fish! Fish! This ocean is cold and dark, and right up above is the warm bright world where y'all's meant to be. Y'all can fly through the air, go anywhere y'all want, all the way up to Heaven. Come with me. I’ll take y'all there.’ So off he slithers, and y'all follow him to the edge of the sea, and it is just like he said—bright and beautiful. And before y'all know it he’s flipped his serpent’s tail and flung y'all up onto the shore. And y'all say, ‘Serpent, show me how to fly!’ But he’s long gone. So y'all try to flap y'all's wings, only y'all ain’t got wings, so y'all's just flailing around on the beach, and the warm sun starts beating down hot, and y'all's drying out and y'all can’t get no air, and y'all beg the ocean to come and take y'all back, and a big warm wave washes up on the shore and carries y'all out to sea, and y'all's where you need to be until God himself gives y'all wings.” |
