WHAT IS A
CARTOUCHE?

In Egyptian
cartouche is an
elongated oval with
a horizontal line at
one end, indicating
that the enclosed
inscription is a royal
name or a god’s
name. The oval is
said to represent
an eternal loop,
protecting the
name and ensuring
that it is never
forgotten.

The hieroglyphs
stand for sounds,
not letters, so the
six-letter name
Elaine, for example,
requires only four
symbols.
