Shaw never shied
away from controversy,
in 1938 hiring black
vocalist
Billie Holliday
to tour the
(1904-1944) in Europe.
In 1944, though his body w
as not
r
ecovered, Miller was presumably
killed when his plane was shot down
over the
English Channel.
Shaw, a celebrated clarinetist and
composer, returned to the U.S.
physically and emotionally
exhausted after 18 months in the
Pacific Theater.  A self-described
"difficult" man, he was married and
divorced eight times.
