| The Story of Valentine's Day |
| Valentine's Day may have originated with the old Roman festival Lupercalia, observed February 15, which anticipated the coming of spring. The Lupercalia festival is so ancient that it is believed to predate even the Romans. It included a fertility and purification ritual, perhaps with human sacrifice and usually with a great deal of bawdy rollicking. When Christianity spread throughout Europe, missionaries deliberately associated the pagan Lupercalia festival with the February 14 Feast Day of St. Valentine. There are two Christian martyrs by who became known as St. Valentine. One was a Roman priest and physician who lived in the third century C.E. and the other was a bishop of Terni, in central Italy. In the legends surrounding the two Valentines, they protected Christians from persecution and officiated at marriages during wartime, which was forbidden. Conducting these secret weddings might be why Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The Roman god Cupid has long been a patron of Valentine's Day. In Greek mythology, Cupid was known as Amor and as Eros — both meaning "love." |
