| Thank-You Notes and Cards: Why, When, and How |
| The ritual of giving and receiving gifts is important in every culture. In some societies, there is a strict protocol for gift-giving. In the U.S., people tend to choose and give presents as expressions of their individual styles. Click HERE to learn about the "language of flowers." Symbolically, whether the gift is a baby stroller or a company's promo- tional T-shirt, it begins a cycle of giving and receiving. The cycle is completed when the recipient acknowledges and expresses gratitude for the gift, whether by presenting his or her own gift or by writing a thank-you card or letter. Or the cycle may continue, like a traveling wheel, into lifelong friendship. |
| The gifts—their size, cost, frequency, and intimacy—convey important messages. Sending a thank-you note promptly, for example, indicates that the recipient values the gift (or kind gesture, hospitality, and so forth) and wants to show respect for the giver. You should express your appreciation in writing, as soon as possible, for...
There might be other times when you feel that a thank-you note is in order. Follow your instincts. On your note, be sure to acknowledge the gift, thank the giver, and mention why you value the gift (even if you don't really like it; for example, "Every time I look at it, I will think of you and your kindness"). | Victory of Samothrace, also called the Nike of Samothrace, a third- century BCE marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike (Victory). the most celebrated sculptures in the world. The small "joke" here is that the original right wing is missing. The statue’s outstretched right wing is a symmetrical plaster version of the original left one. This is a gracious and appropriate thank-you card for decorative gifts: artistic vases, framed photographs, portraits, landscapes, figurines, and so forth. |
| TEXT: You are a breath of spring, fresh and delighting in simple things—clear country mornings and evenings and friends; and while others are cynical, you make amends for them, constant and pure of heart, doing your part, and much more... to be kind when the world is indifferent and cold; to protect and to nurture the creatures of God; to be new every day while they, fragile of spirit, grow old; and if I've never told you before, I shall do so this minute: The world is a lovelier place with you in it. |
